NEDERLAND — Late Tuesday night Nederland’s Colton Weisbrod sent out a tweet after he and the Nederland Bulldogs lost to the Port Arthur Memorial Titans.
It stated how rough games like the one he played in that night kept him up until the morning. So this Port Arthur News sports writer tweeted Weisbrod back with a quote from a famous NBA star.
The quote read “I've missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I've lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I've been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I've failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.” It was said by Michael Jordan.
Weisbrod, who immediately made the quote his lock screen on his cell, took the quote seriously and now put the Memorial game in the past. Weisbrod scored a Nederland Bulldogs Classic record 48 points Thursday in the Bulldogs 70-47 win over Alvin.
“The quote definitely helped,” Weisbrod said. “I still have it there so thanks for that. Tonight felt amazing. The team was great. We continue to play like that and we will be very hard to beat.”
Weisbrod said Nederland Coach Brian English noticed he was close to the record midway through the fourth period and in a timeout asked the team if they wanted to be a part of history.
“All the teammates raised their hand and said yes,” Weisbrod added. “That is something special. It left me speechless to know my team was behind me and to want to be a part of this with me.”
The previous record for a game at the Bulldogs Classic was 46 points set by Nederland’s Jamie Weaver. Weaver set the mark in 1982.
There has been a lot of talent come through the Bulldogs Classic in the previous 41 years. Names like Kendrick Perkins who is now in the NBA and HCYA’s Jared Jackson who is currently playing in the tournament. Jackson is headed to North Carolina next year and is the nation’s No. 2 rated small forward.
