PORT ARTHUR — Now the wins and losses start to mean a lot more for boys basketball teams as the district schedules begin tonight.

The Port Arthur Memorial Titans are 9-4 on the season and welcome the Deer Park Deer to Titans Gym tonight for a 7 p.m. contest.

Memorial went 3-1 this past weekend at the 42nd Annual Bulldogs Classic with the lone loss coming in the championship against Beaumont West Brook, 63-53.

The Titans defeated Lumberton 86-34, downed Victory Prep 96-43 and took down Christian Life 59-48.

West Brook’s game plan was simple against Memorial, let Dorian Chatman score as much as he wants and take the rest of the Titans out of the picture.

Chatman scored 28 of the Titans’ 53 points.

Memorial Coach Travis Williams has several times this season pointed to Dec. 17 as the first crucial date on the Titans’ schedule as it was the start of District 21-5A play.

“All these non-district games are building to the start of district,” Williams said. “We want to be playing our best on that date.”

The start of District 20-4A play could not get any bigger in Beaumont as the Ozen Panthers and Central Jaguars face off at the Montagne Center.

Both teams come into the game with 12-1 records after stellar non-district performances.

This will not be the first meeting between the two this year as Ozen defeated Central 66-58 to win the championship at the YMBL Tournament.
