The late Katherine Charles, a 1982 graduate of Thomas Jefferson High School, will be inducted into the Sam Houston State Hall of Honor at the annual dinner on Saturday in the Lowman Student Center in Huntsville.
Katherine was on the SamHouston Ladykat Volleyball team that won the first ever Gulf Star Conference Championship by defeating Southwest Texas State in 1984. The Bearkat Volleyball made two consecutive NCAA Division I Final Four appearances.
Charles earned All-Conference selections each of her four years at SHSU. The volleyball team record while she attended SHSU was 186 wins and 44 losses.
Katherine was initiated into Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. while at SHSU and maintained close ties with her sorority sisters after graduation. She loved athletics and held her SHSU Physical Education
degree in high esteem.
Katherine worked as an elementary school teacher in the Stafford Municipal School District in Stafford, Texas.
As a teacher in the school district, she was allowed to continue her passion for athletics by serving as an assistant volleyball and basketball coach at Stafford Middle School and High School.
Her unfortunate demise occurred two days after her birthday in 1993. She worked hard and gave her best to the SHSU volleyball team and athletic program. Katherine would be so proud of this honor.
Accepting this posthumous honor on her behalf will be her twin sister Kathleen Darnell.
