PNG falls to Santa Fe

By Cody Pastorella
The Port Arthur News

The wrong Indians won in Mont Belvieu on Teusday night. Instead of the Lady Indians of Port Neches-Groves riding their 14-0 district record into the area round of the Class 4A playoffs with confidence, the Santa Fe Lady Indians mauled Rock-A-Noos in three games.

PN-G was never really involved in the match. They lost 25-9, 25-16 and 25-15.

Indians head coach Barbara Comeaux said she was very proud of her team’s accomplishments this season but would have liked a better showing against Santa Fe.

“We didn’t play like the team that got us here,” she said. “It’s disappointing to lose like that. I’m proud of my girls, but you never want to go out like that. We didn’t play with any confidence. We were never on the attack. We never moved our feet.”

With the loss, Rock-A-Noos finished its season 24-9. With the win, Santa Fe improves to 28-12, including two victories over PN-G this season.

Earlier in the season, Santa Fe beat Rock-A-Noos during tournament play. That match went five games. Tuesday night’s game in Barbers Hill’s gymnasium was a much different story, however.

Santa Fe’s Tara Frantz, Kinsey Mims and Regina Trapp over powered and outmatched Rock-A-Noos all night, combining for 44 kills and 20 blocks. Mims led the way with 17 kills while Trapp led with 11 blocks.

“We did not play tonight,” Comeaux said. “I knew this team was going to be tough but they shouldn’t have beat us like that. They have a good offense, you have to give credit to them but I felt like we were coming in here with enough momentum that we could compete and give ourselves a chance to win. We played a very good team who played a very good game and we didn’t play at all.”

PN-G never got on the offensive. Rock-A-Noos only held leads three times in the match. In Game 2, PN-G got out to a 2-1 lead and went ahead 7-6. Game 2 was tied 9-9 when Santa Fe left Rock-A-Noos in the dust, scoring six straight points to build a 15-9 lead.

Santa Fe’s long runs made the difference all night.

PN-G, meanwhile, was led by Kayla Prasnicki who posted six kills and nine digs for the Lady Indians. Mallory Livingston contributed five service points, Sami Jo Williams had two aces, Paige Miller had nine assists and Brandi Guidry had eight assists.

Rock-A-Noos will graduate four players from this year’s squad, including Prasnicki, Williams, Kourtney Benoit and Lindsey Holland.
