The Central Jaguars scored 13 unanswered points in the fourth period to slip past the gritty Vidor Pirates 34-28 at Babe Zaharias Stadium Friday night in District 22-4A action.
The Pirates (1-6, 0-4) grabbed a 28-21 advantage early in the fourth period behind quarterback Roman Franklin’s 4-yard keeper.
Central (4-3, 2-2) recovered quickly when quarterback Patrick Fobbs hit swift receiver Isaiah Wise on a 57-yard bomb as the Jaguars knotted it up at 28-28.
Fobbs threw his second touchdown pass on the night to seal the contest when he connected with David Mayfield on a 13-yard strike with 2:28 remaining in the game.
The Pirates managed to move the ball to the Jaguar 36 on the game’s last series but were thwarted on fourth down.
Fobbs completed 12-of-21 passes for 194 yards. Wise hauled in five catches for 113 yards and Derrick Hall had five grabs for 64 yards.
Central outgained the Pirates 299-226.
Fullback Theron Reynolds paced the 199-yard ground effort by the Pirates with 88 yards on 10 carries while Bo Pillsbury added 56 yards on 11 totes.
Central received field goals of 25 and 27 yards by kicker Fernando Uribe to grab a 6-0 lead in the first period.
Vidor tied the game early in the second with Franklin scoring on a 6-yard dart. The Pirates took the lead on a 56-yard fumble return by Clayton Harbison.
Central bounced right back though with Fobbs scoring on a 5-yard gallop and Mayfield added a 1-yard touchdown run to give the Jaguars a 21-14 lead at intermission.
The Pirates were able to tie things up again when Reynolds broke loose on a 41-yard scoring jaunt in the third period.
Chales Thomas led the Central ground game with 65 yards on 10 carries. Franklin completed 3-of-11 passes for 27 yards.
The Pirates will be seeking their first 22-4A victory next Friday when they welcome first-place Port Neches-Groves. Central will visit Dayton.
