Turner, Hawks rally past EC

The Port Arthur News

WINNIE — Three second half touchdowns from Jacoby Turner rallied Hardin-Jefferson past East Chambers here Friday night, 41-30, in a game that went back-and-forth the entire second half.

EC and H-J both evened their non-district records at 2-2.

Turner, who rushed for 120 yards on five carries, rallied the Hawks to a 27-21 third quarter lead by racing for touchdown runs of 38 and 84 yards, while also booting five PATs on the night.

But the Bucs weren’t dead in the final quarter and took a 30-27 lead late in the game as Joe Martinez booted a 28-yard field goal, and junior quarterback Hank Jones scored from the six at the 4:37 mark of the fourth period.

Hardin-Jefferson used the receiving talents of Turner who grabbed a Blake Venable pass of 21 yards for a touchdown and the Hawks gained a 34-30 margin with just 3:02 left in the contest.

H-J also tacked on another score as Caleb Burnsen returned a Bucs fumble 30 yards for a TD with 2:50 remaining to finish the scoring at 41-30.

Jones led an EC offense that ran up over 400 yards total offense with 118 yards on the ground and two touchdowns, while completing 15-of-25 passes for 168 yards and one score. On the year, the EC junior has now rushed for 413 yards, scored nine touchdowns rushing and has thrown a pair of TD passes.

Justin Hallmark led the EC receiving corps with seven catches for 90 yards and one score.

East Chambers went to intermission leading 21-14. A Jones 12-yard strike to tight end Hallmark from 12 yards with 1:28 left in the second period propelled EC ahead 21-7.

The Hawks struck back on a long kickoff return by Turner and an EC pass interference call to set up Venable’s second touchdown of the night — a 13-yard run with only 0:22 showing on the clock before halftime. Turner’s PAT just cut EC’s lead to seven at 21-14 as the teams headed to halftime.

The Bucs got on the scoreboard early on a Jones 18-yard scamper and a Martinez PAT at the 9:19 mark of the opening period. The scoring drive was set up by a Hallmark interception. Two plays later, the EC quarterback put his team on the board at 7-0.

Venable ran 14 yards for H-J’s opening score and Turner’s PAT with 6:34 of the first knotted the contest at 7-7.

But the hosts were through in the opening period as Jacoby Carrington ran eight yards for a touchdown with only 0:06 on the clock to give EC a 14-7 lead at the end of the first period.
