BEAUMONT — West Brook’s Christian Michael lived up to the hype on Friday night, scoring four touchdowns in leading the Bruins to a season-opening 50-7 trouncing of Ozen at Durley Stadium.
One of the top running backs in the state of Texas, Michael rushed for 139 yards on 12 carries and scored three touchdowns. He also caught two passes for 34 yards and a touchdown. If not for a penalty, he would have thrown a touchdown pass as well.
“I really wanted that touchdown pass because I’ve never thrown one before,” said Michael. “To catch a touchdown, run for three and then throw for one would have been great.
“It was a total effort tonight, not just me. The linemen did a great job opening up some holes for me. I just came out focused and did what I’m supposed to do.”
After a sluggish first quarter, the Bruins scored 50 unanswered points.
Ozen started the scoring on a 51-yard touchdown pass from Marquise Moore to Anthony Lee. Facing third-and-15 from his own 49, Moore threw the ball deep down the left sideline and Lee out jumped the Bruins defender for the ball inside the five. Fellow receiver Willie Jefferson helped push Lee into the end zone.
By the time the Michael touched the ball, West Brook was in its second possession and trailing 7-0. Michael made the most of his first carry, rushing for 19 yards. He carried twice more during that possession, but it was bogged down and ended in a 42-yard punt.
The two quarterbacks exchanged interceptions early in the second quarter. Ozen’s Ricky Francis picked off Christian Louis on a ball that was deflected by Pierre Harmon. The Bruins Taylor Reed returned the favor by intercepting Moore and returning it 43 yards to the Panthers 37 yard line.
On his fifth carry of the game, Michael broke loose up the middle for a 37-yard touchdown to tie the game at 7-7.
The Bruins defense forced Ozen to punt on its next possession. Michael struck again on the very next play from scrimmage. He broke off right tackle and raced down the sideline untouched for a 51-yard TD. After gaining just 24 yards on his first four attempts, he rushed for 95 yards on his next two before finishing the half with 130 yards on nine totes.
West Brook closed out the first half scoring when Louis hit Donte Lopez on a slant route for a 5-yard TD with 26 seconds remaining to give the Bruins a 21-7 halftime lead. That capped an eight-play drive that began as a result of Jordan Garrett’s interception of Moore and was aided by a pass interference penalty on third-and-eight.
It was more of the same for the Bruins in the third quarter. Garrett intercepted Moore, his second of the game, in the Panthers opening drive of the third quarter. Louis hit Michael for a pair of completions, the first covering 12 yards and the second a 22-yard scoring strike to make the score 28-7.
Garrett, who plays both ways, switched to running back and scored on a 37-yard run on the Bruins second possession of the half. A two-point conversion by Jeremy Cooper made the score 36-7. Michael scored his third rushing touchdown of the night on an 8-yard run up the middle with 17 seconds left in the third quarter to put the Bruins up 43-7.
The Bruins amassed 458 yards of total offense, 323 on the ground and 135 in the air. Cooper rushed for 68 yards on six carries and Louis added 36 yards on 11 rushes. Louis completed 7-of-14 passes for 135 yards.
James White led Ozen with 78 yards on 17 carries. Moore completed 10-of-23 passes for 163 yards, but was plagued by four interceptions.
