Nederland suffers first loss at WS
The Port Arthur News
QUINCY, Mass. — The Nederland 14-year-old All Stars fell 2-1 in nine innings to Norwalk, Conn., on Tuesday afternoon at the Babe Ruth World Series, giving the team a 2-1 record in the National Pool.
Nederland, which is the Southwest representative at the tournament, committed an error in the bottom of the ninth inning that led to Nowalk's winning run.
In the ninth, an error gave Connecticutt a runner at first. Then a double scored the winning run off Ryan Quinn, who got the loss. Quinn relieved Jacob Pitts in the sixth inning, after Pitts allowed a lead-off triple. Norwalk managed to score the runner on a sacrifice fly.
Pitts went five innings, allowed two hits, struck out nine and was charged with the tying run in the sixth inning. Pitts was named the game's MVP, as he also went 1-for-4 at the plate.
The teams combined for just eight hits, with Nederland having five. Quinn allowed just one hit in his four innings.
Nederland scored its one run in the third inning when Gerran Freeman, wo was 1-for-4, singled in Justin Ridgaway from second base. Ridgaway reached first on an error to lead-off the inning. Stephen Schlett, who was 1-for-4, pushed Ridgaway to second base with a single.
Nederland held the 1-0 lead until the sixth inning.
Jordan Wood and Trent Fontenot were the other two players to collect hits on Tuesday.
Southwest head coach Steven Pitts said his team's problems were as simple as bad timing.
"We made some mistakes on the bases and committed errors in the wrong situations," said Pitts, whose team is now 10-1 this summer. "The pitching was great on both sides, we just ran ourselves out of some innings with base-running mistakes and we left some runners strandred, but that's just part of the game."
Pitts added that Nederland, which will play Youngstown, Ohio, for its final pool game today at 1:30 p.m. CST, is still in good shape.
He said if they beat Ohio, which is 3-0 thus far, there will be a tie for first place. Also, if Washington, who Nederland beat 10-1 on Sunday, loses its next game, Texas would finish the pool in at least third place.
The top three teams from both pools will advance to the regular tournament bracket, which starts Thursday.
"We just have to put this behind us and come back tomorrow ready to play," Pitts said.
