Young PN-G struggles at Jasper

PORT NECHES -- Right when the video screens brightened Monday afternoon, the Port Neches-Groves coaches noticed the best part about Saturday's Jasper scrimmage.
The Indians are extremely young on defense. They struggled plenty in Jasper's Doghouse, too. But the Indians have plenty of video to see as a teaching tool. They can improve some in time for Saturday's final pre-season tuneup at Port Arthur Memorial.
Jasper outscored PN-G, 2-1, in the controlled segment and then outpointed the Indians 2-0 in one quarter of simulated game conditions.
Indians chief Matt Burnett did not sugar-coat the group's performance after last Saturday's display, either. A more experienced, much faster group of Bulldogs under coach Thomas Brooks exposed numerous areas where PN-G needed to return to the drawing board.
The Tribe basically deployed 11 new defensive starters and Jasper effectively moved the ball and delivered big plays against defensive coordinator Carl Broussard's novices. Several of PN-G's more seasoned defenders did not participate at Jasper, including left end Jerin Spikes, linebacker Christian Kerr and defensive lineman Lindon Hightower.
Another lineman, senior Blake Patin, sustained a hyperextended knee injury on Jasper's first scrimmage play.
"We made a lot of mistakes but the bright spot is they're all correctable," Burnett said prior to Monday's film session. "The pleasing thing is we get it on video and get to analyze it. Our run defense wasn't real strong. It goes back to inexperience and needing to work on better technique. Just seeing themselves on tape should help.
"I'm happy that we played Jasper and that Jasper's good. They had a lot of speed. They exposed a lot of our areas where we need improvement. No doubt we have a lot of work and there's no doubt that Jasper got the best of it. But we've got a long journey and this is the first step. We have four more before we start district."
Burnett was referring to Saturday's work at Memorial as well as the Indians' three pre-district games.
PN-G scored once in the controlled segment when junior running back David St. Clair found the end zone on a six-yard run at the end of a 70-yard possession.
Jasper busted loose from long distance with its speed. Quarterback Dominique Bailey flipped a 45-yard screen toss to wide receiver Victor Spikes. A 4.5 speedster, Bailey also ripped the Indians' defense for a 60-yard run. Sophomore Ben Armstrong also was impressive for Bulldog coordinator Ty Quick's offense.
Indians' defensive coordinator Broussard singled out the efforts of senior strong safety Alex Gaspard and senior right end Aaron Shetley for their play at Jasper.
PN-G's offensive coordinator Dan Welch definitely wanted his line to show significant improvement in protecting the passer. Jasper sacked Tribe senior QB Harrison Tatum at least four times and hurried Tatum by sending blitz packages at the Indians offensive front.
Tatum completed 5 of 10 passes for 38 yards and delivered one interception. His leading receiver, junior Kyler Segura, collected three receptions for 26 yards.
Senior running back Josh Wright and junior Caleb Harmon led an encouraging PN-G rushing attack. Wright carried nine times for 71 yards and Harmon 10 for 65.
