Nederland 14s roll through Washington
The Port Arthur News
QUINCY, Mass. — The Nederland 14-year-old All Stars pounded out 10 hits and unloaded a 10-1 beating over Skagit Valley, Wash., on Sunday morning at the Babe Ruth World Series.
The 14s are now 10-0 this summer and 2-0 in the National Pool at the World Series. Nederland won its first game by coming from behind for a 4-3 victory over Cambridge, Mass. on Saturday night.
Head coach Steven Pitts says one more win in pool play should be enough for his club to advance to the regular tournament bracket, which will start Thursday.
Stephen Schlett and Trent Fontenot were the top performers against Washington. Fontenot, who earned MVP honors at the East Texas State Tournament, was named MVP of Sunday’s game as well. He went 2-for-5 with two doubles and three RBI. Schlett, meanwhile, stayed hot. After going 2-for-2 with three RBIs on Saturday, he turned in a 2-for-3 performance Sunday, including two doubles and three more RBI.
Brett Brown and Ryan Quinn combined efforts for a three-hitter. Nederland scored a run in the first, three in the second, four in the third, one in the fifth and one in the sixth to make its mark of 10. Brown, who got the win, did
not allow Washington’s solo run until the third inning and it was unearned.
Brown had five strikeouts and allowed two hits in four innings of work. Quinn pitched the final three innings, struck out two and allowed one hit.
To round out the rest of the hitting, Jacob Pitts went 2-for-4, Gerran Freeman went 1-for-3 and Justin Ridgaway went 2-for-2. And Hunter Knox, who was moved to catcher just before the start of the game because of an injury to Daniel Sparrow, went 1-for-4.
Pitts said Knox did a great job catching and that he was happy to do whatever the team needed from him. Pitts added that Sparrow was hit in the shin by a wild pitch during warm-ups. Doctors told Pitts that Sparrow has a deep bruise and will be ready to play as soon as the catcher feels up to it.
“We’re just going to play it by ear,” Pitts said. “When he shows me he can play and that he is capable of playing without it hindering him, he will play.”
About the win, Pitts said the team’s performance was much better from Saturday’s close game.
“We hit the ball a lot better,” he said. “We hit the ball like I know we are capable of and we pitched a lot better. We had too many walks in that first game and that really made the difference. Brett and Ryan did a great job and everybody hit.
“Even the guys who did not record an official hit, hit the ball hard but just right to someone.”
Nederland, which is the Southwest representative at the tournament, will have Monday off. Pitts said that could not come at a better time with Sparrow’s injury. He added most of his players will travel to Fenway Park in Boston for a little site seeing.
The 14s will be back in action Tuesday when they play Norwalk, Conn. at 1:30 p.m. CST. Nederland will meet Youngstown, Ohio on Wednesday to finish its competition in pool play.
