ESPY awaits Kevin's walk
By Tom Halliburton
The Port Arthur News
For those Port Arthurans and Buffalo Bills who have followed Kevin Everett's day-to-day return to mobility, the night of July 20 should rank among this summer's more emotional ones.
ESPN has announced that Port Arthur native and former Buffalo Bills tight end Everett will receive the Jimmy V Award for Perserverance at the 16th annual ESPY Awards after walking again from a life-threatening spinal cord injury.
The 16th annual show honoring sports figures throughout the past year will be held at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles. The Nokia Theatre is a new, world-class 7,100-seat venue located across the street from Staples Center in downtown Los Angeles. The two-hour event will be hosted by entertainer/singer Justin Timberlake.
Everett walking across the stage on his own to accept the ESPY should be a sight to see at 8 p.m. (CDT).
Fan votes are determining the winners in 37 categories except the Arthur Ashe Courage Award (1968 Olympic medalists John Carlos and Tommie Smith), Best Comeback (Josh Hamilton of the Texas Rangers) and Everett's Jimmy V Award for Perserverance.
National voting in those categories continues through July 12.
The newly created Kevin Everett Foundation will serve as the July 14 host for Kevin's Football Camp in Port Arthur's Memorial Stadium. The camp will run from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. with free admission for youths age 4 through 18. Nike, Gatorade and McDonald's are sponsors who have committed to support the endeavor. NFL players on the agenda to attend include Cedric Griffin of the Minnesota Vikings, Kevin Garrett of the Kansas City Chiefs, Robert Ferguson and Johnny Jolly of the Green Bay Packers, and Casey Hampton of the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Two events will be held this weekend in the Buffalo area with proceeds going to the Kevin Everett Foundation. The first Kevin Everett Golf Classic weekend will begin with a 12th Man Tailgate Party on Sunday from 4 to 8 p.m. at Brierwood Country Club in Hamburg, N.Y. The inaugural Kevin Everett golf tournament will tee off on Monday in Brierwood CC at 11 a.m. Football celebrities in attendance are scheduled to include Jim Kelly, Jerome Bettis, Kordell Stewart, Rocket Ismail, and Roscoe Parrish.
While he still is involved in daily therapy sessions, Kevin started this Foundation on June 20 and has believed it likely should turn into a life-long labor of love for him.
"If somebody needs a ramp or a wheelchair or equipment at their home to do exercises, that's what I want to supply them with," he said. "Their recovery may not be as successful if they don't have the things they need. I want to be there for the people that need these things. It doesn't matter what it is. I want others to reach the point where I am today."
