Horseshoe and washerboard aficionados were in rare form Saturday complete with a few friendly heckles and old fashioned fun.
Bobby Hardin and Rodney Reeves may have come in second place in horseshoes but that didn’t stop them from teasing long time friends and the first place team of Alvin Laverne and Jack Anniboli.
Laverne said the best bet is to practice and try to stay consistent.
“If you look a my throw it’s completely opposite from everybody else,” Laverne said.
The men aren’t new to the sport; they play every Wednesday and Sunday at the park and participate in games in Port Neches and Winnie as well.
The group sat beneath the shade of a tarp after their games and watched the nearby group of contestants play washers.
At the washerboard area David Bledsoe took a few seconds from play to talk about the game.
“We’re just trying to do our best and have some fun but we’re trying to win too,” Groves resident Bledsoe said.
The Mid-County Kiwanis hosted its third annual Horseshoe and Washerboard Tournament to benefit local children. Monies raised from the entry fees go towards the club’s scholarship program that benefits students from Nederland and Port Neches-Groves high schools.
Kiwanis also hosts an annual Christmas party given to local underprivileged children. Key Club in local high schools is a Kiwanis sponsored program.
Lane Emmett, a Kiwanis member, came out to play and help raise scholarship funds.
“I practiced a bit but I don’t think I’ll win,” Emmett said with a laugh.
Winners of the washerboard Tournament were:
• Chris Borne and Kody Latiolais, first place
• Aaron Gibson and Chris Johnson, second place
