Crowds flocked to the Groves Senior Citizens Service Center for food, fellowship and a good cause on Saturday.
Members of the Port Neches Groves Rotary Club and representatives of the Groves and Port Neches senior centers donned aprons and dished out chicken and sausage gumbo and potato salad for their annual fundraiser that assists both the centers.
Ruth Bailey and husband Roland of Port Neches stopped by for the dine-in experience of gumbo lunch.
“We’ve been coming here (to the event) for two years now,” Ruth Bailey.
In one corner of the facility Helen Minton, who attends the Port Neches center, manned the serving line next to Olivia Wellings, board member of the Groves Center, and Sharon Lemoine, director of the Port Neches Center.
Nelda Devillier, director of the Groves center, was in the kitchen area assisting with drinks.
“This fundraiser helps us get extra things that are not normally budgeted and we run on a limited budget,” Devillier said. “Last year we bought a new cart and other different things for the center. This is really a blessing for our center.”
Outside the back door Rotary members handled the numerous drive-through customers.
Rotary member Stephen Oubre said the fundraiser has been going on for about 20 years. The Port Neches and Groves Rotary clubs combined in 2005 and kept the fundraiser and proceeds are divided between the two senior centers.
Renella Primeaux, a board member with the Port Neches Senior Center, said the proceeds mean a lot to the center.
“We have new coverings for the blinds are they are beautiful,” Primeaux said.
