PN-G Spanish Club members begin blanket project

PORT NECHES — Members of the Port Neches-Groves High School Spanish Club hope to create a warmer Christmas for ill and traumatized infants through an organization called Project Linus.

Students began working on making infant “tie blankets,” which they hope to complete and donate to babies locally and internationally before the Christmas holidays. They began working on the project at their Oct. 9 meeting.

“I couldn’t believe the turnout that we had,” Spanish Club Sponsor Lyndsay Longron said. “The students made 50 blankets in two hours. We hope to make at least 200 before we’re through.”

The students themselves bought the first half of the material for the blankets which were started on Oct. 9, according to Longron.

“We will be purchasing the next half using the money we raise from our candy fundraiser,” she said. “If we purchase a certain amount of fabric from JoAnn’s, they will give us a discount.”

The project has been a big motivational force for all 81 members of the club, according to Spanish Club President Morgan McLain

“We do community service projects every semester and this was one the students could easily do,” McLain said. “It’s easy and effective. We wanted a big service project that everyone would enjoy.”

While it is a Spanish Club project, members of PN-G’s National Honor Society plan to help out as well.

“Members of the National Honor Society will join us on Nov. 18 from 3:15-5:30 p.m. to make the last set of the blankets,” Longron said. “We hope to be finished by then.”

Once they are completed, the blankets will be packaged and shipped to the Houston chapter of Project Linus.

“Port Neches-Groves High School has the best students,” Longron said. “They are always searching for ways to get involved and help out the community in any way possible.”
