PORT NECHES — Port Neches firefighters recovered an unidentified body from a submerged Ford Taurus station wagon, Thursday, June 19, shortly after Port Neches police officers were alerted to the vehicle’s presence in the Lower Neches Valley Authority canal at 1 p.m.

“Investigators at the scene believe that sometime during the night the vehicle was traveling northbound on Highway 366 near Orchard Avenue, failed to negotiate a curve and left the roadway, crossed the railroad tracks and entered the LNVA canal,” Paul Lemoine, PNPD chief, said in a release.

Pipeline workers walking the canal spotted the roof of the car and called PNPD, Lemoine said.

Jefferson County Precinct 7 Justice of the Peace Judge Brad Burnet ordered an autopsy for the victim. Police are not releasing the victim’s sex — or where the body was found in the vehicle — at this time.

“The identification of the victim is pending notification of next of kin,” Lemoine said.
