PN Council to hear info from Coast Guard

PORT NECHES — Two members of the U.S. Coast Guard are set to give a presentation to Port Neches City Council on the South East Texas and South West Louisiana Area Contingency Plan during Thursday’s meeting at 4 p.m. at city hall.

The 15 to 20 minute presentation will be made by Capt. Paitl, Captain of the Port of the Marine Safety Unit in Port Arthur and Lt. Junior Grade Joshua Valdivia, according to information from the city.

Andrè Wimer, Port Neches city manager, said the Coast Guard made a presentation to Nederland City Council recently.

“The Area Contingency Plan describes the strategy for a coordinated federal, tribal, state and local response to remove a worst case oil and hazardous material discharge and to mitigate or prevent a substantial threat of such, from a vessel, offshore facility, or onshore facility within the Southeast Texas and Southwest Louisiana Area of Responsibility,” according to information from the city.

The Coast Guard will discuss lessons learned from the Deep Water Horizon disaster, job responsibilities of the Coast Guard and its Marine Safety Unit in Port Arthur.

Other agenda items include:

• Discuss and take action on a request from Donald Foster, Cannibals Car Club, to close Port Neches Avenue from Nall Street to Montgomery Street on Saturday, May 10, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. for a car show.

• Discuss and take action regarding the approval of an ordinance authorizing participation with other Entergy service area cities in matters concerning Entergy Texas Inc. at the Public Utility Commission of Texas and the Federal Regulatory Commission in 2014.

• Discussion regarding Merriman Street repair work, 2013 Certificates of Obligation.
