Medical Center of SETX debuts new mobile AngioScreen coach

PORT ARTHUR — A process that normally requires at least an hour of your time and a significant chunk of your money has been reduced to 15 minutes and $49.95, thanks to the latest addition at the Medical Center of Southeast Texas.

On Tuesday, the Medical Center unveiled its new customized mobile AngioScreen coach, which provides five different types of health screenings to employees in a 90-mile radius that ends just shy of Houston, Deborah Callais, director of imaging service, radiation oncology, and angio screening, said.

“We’re trying to reach people that may want to get these screenings, but just don’t have time,” Callais said. “It’s painless, and it takes a total of 15 minutes.”

The coach will park at a worksite or public place and allow all employees with appointments to receive screenings including an ultrasound of the left and right carotid arteries; an ankle brachial index (ABI) which reads blood pressure in both legs; and an EKG test for arterial fibrillation and an abdominal aorta aneurysm.

The participants will spend five minutes filling out paperwork and then less than 10 minutes on the test before receiving immediate color printouts of their results, along with a digital copy on DVD to provide to their physician. If the patient does not have a primary physician, the Medical Center will recommend a list of local doctors, medical assistant Bill McComber said.

The only one of its kind in Southeast Texas, and one of two Texas or Louisiana locations to boast its own bathroom, the coach offers screenings that can preemptively save lives — although it in no way takes the place of a physician, Callais said.

“Heart disease is the number one killer of both men and women,” she said. “Some people can be a walking time bomb.”

McComber agreed, adding that of the 184 people who had utilized the coach’s services as of Thursday morning, 54 percent of them exhibited symptoms of pre-hypertension.

“You really don’t know what you’ll find until you go looking for it,” McComber said.
