Stahl seeks warm items for homeless

PORT ARTHUR — As fall-like temperatures arrive Joyce Stahl’s thoughts turn to those less fortunate.

The 82-year-old Port Arthur woman is continuing her quest to help the homeless stay warm during the cold months.

“Coats, sweaters, jackets, scarfs, hats, gloves, blankets — anything to keep them warm,” Stahl said.

A former volunteer at the Hospitality Center, Stahl has seen first-hand the transients who live on the street and have nothing to keep them warm.

“I’ve been doing this since I moved to Port Arthur in 2000,” she said of the move to take care of her mother. “I found out there are so many homeless people in the area, which is why I started this.”

Last year Stahl collected more than 50 coats and a dozen blanket which were distributed to the less fortunate. The items she collects this year will  be taken to the Hospitality Center and distributed free of charge after the lunch meal.

She realizes there are thrift-shops in the area which sell items for a greatly reduced rate but sometimes those in need do not have the $1 or 50 cents to purchase such an item.

“This is a personal thing I do or my ministry, my church and my Lord Jesus Christ,” she said.

Stahl has suffered some medical problems and is limited physically in what she can do. She has had hip replacement surgery, suffered a stroke and had emergency open heart surgery recently.

“As long as I can move and breathe and talk I’ll be doing something to help others,” she added.

Donations can be brought to the senior centers in Port Arthur, Nederland and Groves as well as the church office at St. Charles Catholic Church in Nederland. Donations may also be dropped off at the American Legion Post No. 7 on Memorial Boulevard in Port Arthur. She will also arrange for the donations to be picked up by calling 982-0221.
