PA legend to receive star on Hollywood Walk of Fame

— PORT ARTHUR — Janis Joplin’s legacy has never been in question. In her hometown of Port Arthur, there is a replica of her painted Porsche, as well as various other memorabilia from her time in the Golden Triangle. Beyond that, Joplin came in at No. 46 on Rolling Stone’s 2004 list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time, and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995.

On Nov. 4, Joplin’s legacy will be cemented when the “Piece of My Heart” singer is immortalized with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Joplin’s longtime friend Kris Kristofferson, siblings Michael and Laura Joplin, record producer Clive Davis, and emcee Leron Gubler, president and CEO of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, will unveil the star at 11:30 a.m. Kristofferson will perform a special acoustic version of “Me and Bobby McGee,” the number one hit recorded by Joplin in 1970 and released posthumously in 1971.

Sarah Bellian, curator of the Museum of the Gulf Coast, said that people come from afar to visit the hometown of Janis Joplin.

“We are certainly known for Janis Joplin,” Bellian said. “We have people visit from all over the world because they’ve heard that some of her things are here.”

This award, Bellian said, indicates that Joplin’s music has withstood the test of time.

“It says that she has a quality in her music which has endured far beyond what anyone at the time knew,” she said. “The whole era was very definitive for a lot of people, and a whole new generation of people who were not part of the '60s are appreciating the same music for the same reasons it was created. That’s really a wonderful thing.”
