PORT ARTHUR — Reading is fundamental to the success of students. Studies show that the more students read, the more successful they will become. It is also important that families read together. The more parents spend time learning with their children, the more successful the child will become.

Memorial 9th Grade Academy is important to the district, as it is the transition point for our students before they enter the high school. Principal, Dr. Lisa Chambers, and her staff work diligently to ensure the students will be prepared for a smooth transition into the high school, as well as promote citizenship and literacy.

The Memorial 9th Grade newly developed student council, sponsored by Adanna Berry, held a “Family Fun Night” on Tuesday, Oct. 30, in the Port Arthur Public Library. There was a free chili supper for all that attended. Families and staff played board games while students explored the library for their favorite books. Parents were also able to vote and renew their library cards. District supporter and Representative Joe Deshotel, along with Deputy Superintendent, Dr. Mark Porterie and other administrators were present for the event. Deshotel also was a fan favorite, as he read to the tiniest Titans present.
