Andrews uses humor to describe path to success

PORT ARTHUR — Andy Andrews doesn’t consider himself a motivational speaker, but his words moved hundreds of people to both laughter and applause during the Greater Port Arthur Chamber of Commerce 114th Annual Banquet on Tuesday.

Andrews, 54, a New York Times best-selling author, blended his comedy background with his self-described label as a “noticer” to tell the crowd at the Robert A. “Bob” Bowers Civic Center about principles, choices and how everything one does really matters.

Andrews spoke of Edward Lorenz, who, in 1963, made a presentation about what he called the Butterfly Effect. His theory stated that a butterfly could flap its wings, set air molecules in motion and so on and eventually influence weather patterns on the other side of the earth. Fellow scientists laughed.

But by the mid-1990s the Butterfly Effect was proved to be accurate.

The theory is supported by the history of an agricultural product. Norman Bourlag, the man credited with saving 2 billion people from famine, has connections to Franklin D. Roosevelt’s vice president, Henry Wallace, who had connections to George Washington Carver, who had connections to Moses Carver.

“How far back do we go? How far forward do we go in the history of Port Arthur?” Andrews said. “What you do shapes Port Arthur. What kind of difference are we going to make?”

The banquet kicked off with a number of awards: Ambassador of the Year Shannon Quinn, MAXXBOWL; and Small Business of the Year, Bob Shaw Consulting Engineers, as well as acknowledgment of the retiring committee chairpersons, retiring directors and incoming directors.

Sam Monroe, president of Lamar State College-Port Arthur, was named this year’s recipient of the Arthur E. Stilwell Award for 2013.

Also during the event, outgoing Chairman Conrad Cooper handed over the gavel to incoming Chairman Mitch Osborne.

The banquet was originally scheduled for Jan. 28 but was postponed due to a winter storm that left icy roads and the closing of bridges and roads.
