Longtime Nederland ISD trustee Richard Cox has an invested interest in the education of the students of the district.

Cox, 60, said the district’s programs allow graduates choices after leaving high school.

“When they cross the stage and receive their diploma they have choices. They can enter college, go to trade school or into the workforce, they’re prepared,” he said.

The property manager/owner doesn’t said he doesn’t back down from issues the district must face.

“I like to think of issues as challenges,” he said. “As always, we are trying to balance our resources, faculty and staff.”

The district is currently exploring a possible bond project that may be placed before voters in November. A committee is working alongside the Lan Walton group researching facility studies and needs.

The facility and bond study evaluates the district’s facilities and programs in order to have a good environment that enhances learning, he said.

He calls the bond planning process an exciting challenge.

Cox is married to Mary, a second grade teacher at Highland Park Elementary, and the couple have two children. They are members of First United Methodist Church in Port Neches.

Cox is vying for one of two seats on NISD. Other candidates include incumbent Craig Belaire and Michelle Stoneham Barnette. Early voting begins April 28 with a May 10 election date.
