Stacy Moffit has officially withdrawn from the Port Neches-Groves Independent School District board race, leaving incumbent Rusty Brittain as the only candidate for the three-year term of Place 6.
Brittain, 55, is project manager for Turner Industries Group, an industrial contractor and maintenance company.
Brittain has been on the school board 12 years and said he’d like to keep his seat to “see the bond through.”
“The issue is the bond program. The patrons have allowed us, the board, to really enhance the learning atmosphere of Port Neches-Groves,” he said.
Brittain said it’s the board’s duty to “do everything we can to get our money’s worth.”
“It’s exciting times in our district,” he said.
Brittain said his background and board experience qualifies him for another term.
“For the 12 years I’ve been the board, I’ve been president three years. The school board business has changed a lot over the years. The financing has changed,” he said, adding that he has been keeping up with the changes.
He is a member of First Baptist Church of Port Neches and the Masons.
Brittain and his wife, Cindy, have two children, Andrew and Angela.
He earned a bachelor of business management from Lamar University in 1975.
Moffitt, owner of Contact Communications, said he had no comment on his withdrawal. Earlier he noted he had a “for sale” sign in his Groves yard and is considering a move to the Woodville area.
Saturday, May 10, is election day. Early voting will be Monday, April 28, through Tuesday, May 6.
Dr. Gary Stretcher, vice president for academic affairs at Lamar State College-Port Arthur, is running for Place 4, a position with two years remaining on unexpired term. Stretcher was appointed to the Board on Dec. 11 to fill the vacancy resulting from Jim Westbrook’s resignation.
Tonya Petix, a Realtor with Remax First and an investor, and Brant Graham, a Memorial High School assistant principal, are also running for Place 4.
Incumbent Darren McCutcheon, with BASF plant operations, is running for the three-year term of Place 7. Dr. J.D. Taliaferro, higher education administrator for Lamar State College-Port Arthur, is also running for Place 7.
