Seahawks win league opener

JACKSONVILLE, TX. — Jayon James scored just four point for Lamar State College-Port Arthur against Lon Morris but three of those might well have been the biggest in the game as the Seahawks' muscled their way to an 81-73 victory at Bearcats Gym on Tuesday night.

With about 9 minutes left in the second half, James drove the baseline, went up over Lon Morris' 7-foot center and left-handed slam dunked the ball and drew the foul to give the Hawks their first lead of the game.

The Seahawks bench erupted in excitement and LSC-PA came alive down the stretch as they edged out slowly, but surely, over the Bearcats to take a 1-0 conference mark.

"To go up left-handed and slam dunk the ball, that was a big-time play," said Seahawks Head Coach Matt Cross.

Falling behind by as many as 10 points in the first half, the Seahawks were slow in gaining any momentum as they battled Lon Morris' seemingly impenetrable zone defense. Of greater concern, though, was LSC-PA's temporary inability to get shots to fall, even after second and third-chance opportunities.

Sophomore Elijah Pittman kept the Hawks close with 15 of his game-high 20 points coming in the first half. When he wasn't stalking the paint, throwing down thunderous dunks, he was peppering the bottom of the net with 3-pointers.

When the first half ended, the Seahawks were down by seven and looking for answers.

Between Brandon Peters and Elridge Moore, the light bulb came on and the Hawks started fighting back. At the 9 minute mark, James got his slam dunk and free throw.

Stewart, who has missed the past three games with a knee injury, came back strong in the second half, finishing the game with 18. Peters ended up with 12 and Elton Roy 15.

"Winning on the road is a difficult task," said Coach Cross. "We'll learn a lot from this game and we'll take from that and move on."

The Seahawks will travel to Niceville, Fla., for a weekend tournament against two top-ranked NJCAA schools, Northwest Florida CC and Chipola College.

LSC-PA is back in conference action on Nov. 30 when it hosts the perennially tough San Jacinto College squad. Tip off is at 7 p.m.
