MOORE FISHING REPORT: Wardens recount bear disturbance

Every few weeks the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department sends out accounts of interesting encounters in the field. This week’s featured one that highlights the rising bear population in West Texas.

“Two Val Verde County game wardens responded to a call from a landowner who said there was a bear trying to break in to her storage building. Apparently, the bear was hungry, as it was trying to get to a bag of cat food inside.”

“When the bear ignored the homeowner’s yells, she ran back into her house and retrieved her shotgun. A shot was fired in to the air and the bear ran off. The wardens provided the homeowner with information to try and prevent another encounter.”

We were the first paper to cover the return of bears to East and West Texas. Look for more coverage this fall.

    Now onto the report…

North Sabine---Trout remain fair on the north end under birds with action in the channel and on the lake. Reds are good in the marsh on spoons, spinners and live bait. Flounder fair to good around the channel and in the marshes on the Louisiana side of the lake. The Entergy Outfall area is producing fair numbers of reds and trout on mullet.

South Sabine---Trout and reds fair the birds early and late with lots of sand trout starting to show as well. Flounder are fair to good along the Louisiana shoreline on live bait and shad.

Sabine Pass---Bull redfish remain good at the jetties on cut bait. Sharks are still appearing at the jetties but the next cold snap should send them to deeper water. Flounder are fair on live bait fished around drop-offs in the channel.

Lake Calcasieu (Big Lake)---Hackberry Rod and Gun reports Fishing this past week continued to be good on redfish, trout and the flounder bite starting to pick up. Live shrimp and mullet continue to be the best baits while working over shallow reefs in the lake.
