The 34th Annual Saltwater Angler's League of Texas (S.A.L.T.) Memorial Day Classic Fishing Tournament will be held May 24-25 out of the S.A.L.T. Clubhouse on Pleasure Island.
“It’s that time again and we look forward to putting on a good tournament and seeing some nice fish brought in from our great local anglers,” said Mark Foreman of SALT.
The tournament’s entry fee is $30 for both the inshore and offshore divison together.
"This year we decided to combine both divisions into one single fee," Foreman said.
Top money for the heaviest speckled trout would be $1,000 while the largest redfish brings in $800. Biggest black drum and sheepshead earn $150 apiece respectively. First place for flounder is $500.
Both the redfish and black drum categories are for slot-sized fish only.
Offshore categories are for ling, king mackerel and triggerfish (since snapper are not legal for harvest at this time), which pay $500 apiece for first place only.
Junior anglers (15 and younger) can compete for first place prizes for various inshore species ranging from croaker to crabs.
The youth division is free of charge and signing up is not necessary. Kids can just show up and weigh in their catches.
“Everyone is invited to come out and watch the fish brought in. If you want to see what the upcoming summer fishing season will be like, the tournament is usually a pretty good indicator,” said Stan Armstrong of S.A.L.T.
