Opinion

Editorials, columns and letters to the editor from The Port Arthur News as well as opinion pieces from journalists across the country.

T-minus two weeks…give or take a few hours

Going to the chapel and, well, I suppose I’m going to get married. At least that’s what Paige and I have been preparing for since November 2006.
I was just telling her the other day how crazy it is that we’ve been together engaged longer than we were together not engaged.
2006 was a long time ago. Let’s see, we met a little less than four months after Hurricane Rita…and now our 18-month engagement will soon be over and we’ll be married.

  • Talkin' bout my generation
Ok, maybe it’s because I came across some songs by The Who on my iPod, but yes, I’d like to talk about my generation.
I watch a lot of History Channel shows and read a lot of books; I learn about plenty of eras defined by moments and the people who witnessed and created them. I agree with those who’ve written history that history itself is defined by the generations that have passed through it.

  • There’s nothing like a second chance
Did you ever do something in your life that several years down the line you wished you could have one more crack at? Or, at least the chance to do something over again? Just for personal satisfaction?
A very good friend once told me that she lived her life with as little or no regret as possible. I found that very profound and yet as I reflect on my 28 years of living I find that I have little or nothing to really regret either.

  • KENT CONWELL: On the way to San Jacinto Day
A curious thing I’ve noticed about history is that unnoticed nuances can bring about a drastic pivoting in the history of a country or in a person’s life. April 21 is San Jacinto Day, the day on which the battle was fought that made Texas a republic.

  • GENE DAMMON; What if it’s really close?
Consider this scenario:  The Democratic Party selects Obama as its candidate for the Presidency of The United States of America.  Then the General Election in November, Obama vs. McCain, is really close – a repeat of the 2000 contest between Bush and Gore.  After several recounts, it appears that a federal judge will declare McCain to be the winner.  There are widespread demonstrations; rioting breaks out in all the large cities.

  • RONALD C. SPOONER: Does Clinton desire to be free?
How can one explain Hillary Clinton’s repeatedly and gleefully giving an apparently well-thought-out story about ducking gunfire in Bosnia? There is a reluctance to use the L word. But to any reasonably intelligent person, the words “mistake” and “misspoke” don’t match that kind of discrepancy, especially given the proud manner in which she made those assertions.

  • KENT CONWELL: The Seven Wonders of the Lunch Bunch
Some time back, a local paper came out with a survey seeking local opinions in regard to the Seven Wonders of Southeast Texas. A couple weeks back, the results came out, but the survey had been redirected to the wonders of South and Mid County, which was fine. They did a superb job.

  • EDITORIAL: Plan for foster home deserves support
The signs in the rural neighborhood are blunt: “I protest the foster home in Beauxart Gardens by Fellowship Baptist Church.” We understand the concerns of the residents. But when rights collide decisions must be made about what benefits the greater good of the whole area, and in this case we think the plan by Friendship Baptist Church will be the greater benefit.

  • GENE DAMMON: The amazing Obama
The most amazing thing (to me) about Barack Obama is that he still has a viable candidacy. His friend, mentor, and former pastor, “Reverend” Wright, spewed out so much hate, racism, and lies from his pulpit that no one who was voluntarily in his congregation – for 20 years – and who chose to listen to such contentious remarks, should be considered a serious candidate

  • KENT CONWELL: Are we clueless or what?
Have you ever wondered why we in America, no, throughout the world are so clueless? By that, I mean we seem to never learn from the mistakes of those preceding us.
