Robert Lee “Popeye” Dorsey

The Port Arthur News

— Robert L. Dorsey, 91, of Port Arthur, went to be with THE LORD on Sunday, January 27, 2013, at Summer Place in Beaumont.  He was born January 2, 1922, to William and Mary Foreman Dorsey.  Bob was in the Coast Guard during World War II and served on a mine sweeper in the Pacific.  He returned from the war and married the love of his life, Myrline Boudreaux. He retired from Gulf Oil in 1978, as an insulator after thirty-eight years.

Bob had many nicknames, such as, “Rapid Robert,” but was affectionately known by his grandkids as “Popeye.”  He loved his Lord and his family.  One of his favorite quotes was, “Every time I see a dove, I think of our good Lord.”  Feeding the birds and watching them eat gave him great joy.  He also loved to watch a “soft rain.”  He was a very patriotic man, who was always moved to tears at hearing the National Anthem played.

He was preceded in death by his wife of sixty-five years, Myrline; his parents and siblings.

He is survived by his eight children, DiAnne Shippey (Bill) of Coldspring; Randy Dorsey (Mary) of Coldspring; Cindy Dorsey of Nederland; Don Dorsey of Brazoria; Melissa Moore (James) of Port Neches; Mary Moreno (Robert) of Nederland; Jill Dorsey of Colorado; and Rita Hollier (Karl) of Bridge City; grandchildren, Bryan Shippey (Amy) of Colorado; Shane’ Denman (Billy) of Lumberton;  Shane Dorsey (LaTonya) of Huffman; Darrell Gaspard, Jr. of Port Arthur; Heath Gaspard (Stephanie) of Port Neches; Natalie Landry (Cory) of Groves; Angela Walton (Chris) of Houston; Jody Domingue of California;  Jordan Leger (Stephen) of Nederland; Anna Moreno of Nederland; Marc Gomez of New Mexico; Gretchen Hollier of Bridge City; and Luc Hollier of Bridge City; great-grandchildren, Ashleigh Jones (Seth) of Mauriceville; Micah and Hannah Denman, both of Lumberton; Devryn Dorsey of  Houston; Kaden and Brock Dorsey, both of Huffman; Garrett, Grant,  and Grey Gaspard, all  of Port Neches; Corey and Jace Walton, both of Houston; and Rylee and Samuel Leger, both of Nederland; and great-great-grandchildren, Haden Gilley, Laikynn and Acelynn Jones, of Mauriceville.

Bob’s family would like to especially thank Linda Hulin, and her daughter, Ashley Charles, for the fifteen years they faithfully and compassionately cared for our parents. They truly have become part of our family.

A gathering of Mr. Dorsey’s family and friends will be from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., Monday evening, January 28, 2013, at Broussard’s, 505 North 12th Street, Nederland.   His funeral service will be 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, January 29, 2013, at Broussard’s, followed by burial at Memory Gardens of Jefferson County, Nederland.
