Reverend Joseph John Romero

PORT ARTHUR —    Reverend Joseph John Romero passed on to rest with the Lord, Sunday, November 10, 2013, at Christus St. Mary Hospital at the age of 71.

   Father Romero was born July 29, 1942, in Port Arthur, TX, to Florence Theriot Romero and Elias Romero, Sr. He was the youngest of 16 children.

   A Port Arthur native and graduate of Bishop Byrne High School, he entered the seminary and received degrees from St. Mary’s Seminary and the University of St. Thomas, Houston. As he was training in Psychology, he participated in psychiatric work at the Veterans Administration Hospital.

   On May 21, 1969, he was ordained by Bishop Vincent M. Harris at St. Anthony Cathedral in Beaumont with his first assignment as a priest, as an assistant at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, in Orange. He also taught at St. Mary’s High School and dedicated much of his time with the youth in the parish.

   His first pastorate was in 1979, at Sacred Heart, Nacogdoches, with its missions of Immaculate Conception, Moral, and Our Lady of Lourdes, Chireno.

   In 1981, he was transferred to St. Peter the Apostle Parish in Groves, where he served as Pastor for 12 years. His last assignment was in 1993, where he served as Pastor of St. Catherine of Siena Parish in Port Arthur for 10 years until he retired due to poor health.

   Father Romero being very dedicated to his calling was active in the community as a chaplain to the Knights of Columbus, a member of the board of directors of the Orange County Mental Health Association, as well as personally mentoring several men to the priesthood. As a commitment to Mother Mary, as his Mother, every five years he would shepherd a pilgrimage to the Shrine of the Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City to dedicate a Mass in Her honor.

  Loving his Cajun heritage, he enjoyed sharing memories, road trips, Cajun Festivals, food and music with family and friends.

   Father Romero was preceded in death by his parents, Florence and Elias Romero, Sr.; sisters, Lillian Romero, Mabel Romero, Audrey Lea Romero, Mickey Romero, Mildred Brevell, Rose “Totsy” Mason and Lucille Vizena; brothers, Stanley Romero, Lover Romero, Roy Romero, George Romero, Elias Romero, Jr. and Dewey Romero.

   He is survived by two sisters, Eugenia “Cowoo” Oliver of Groves and Ann Hinds of Orange. Father Romero is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

   A gathering of family and friends will be held at St. Catherine’s Catholic Church Thursday, November 14, 2013, from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., with a Rosary to be recited at 7:00 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated for Fr. Joseph J. Romero at St. Catherine’s Catholic Church, 3840 Woodrow Dr., Port Arthur, on Friday, November 15, 2013, at 11 a.m. Interment will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Park in Groves.
