PORT ARTHUR- Mary O. Butler Essex, 75, died on June 12, 2006 at the Medical Center of Southeast Texas.
A native of New Iberia, LA she had lived in Port Arthur, TX for 54 years.
She is preceded in death by both parents; her husband; one daughter; three step-daughters; two sister-in -laws; two brothers and one half- brother. She leaves to cherish her memory two brothers, Lurry Butler Sr. (Grace) of Port Arthur, TX and Milton Butler (Shirley) of New Iberia, LA; two sisters, Alma Hector of New Iberia, LA and Shirley Spencer of Lafayette, LA; four sons, Donald Oliver, Warren Essex (Phyllis), Brad Essex (Mary) and William C. Essex Jr.; two daughters, Elaine Essex Daranda and Wilhemenia Essex; 12 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews and special friends.
Services will be held Saturday, June 17, 2006 at 11 am at St. John Lutheran Church, 4600 Jimmy Johnson Blvd, Port Arthur, TX. The wake will proceed the service from 9:00 am - 11:00 am. Burial will be at Live Oak Cemetery.
Josephine Tadora Graffagnino
PORT ARTHUR- Josephine Tadora Graffagnino, 102, of Port Arthur passed away on Thursday, June 15, 2006, at Christus St. Mary Hospital in Port Arthur.
Services will be conducted at 1:00 P.M. Saturday, June 17, 2006, at Clayton-Thompson Funeral Home in Groves with Rev. Don Donahugh officiating. Burial will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Park in Groves. A gathering of friends and family will take place from 4:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. Friday, June 16, 2006, with a Rosary to be recited at 7:00 P.M. Friday at the funeral home.
Josephine was born on May 30, 1904, in White Castle, Louisiana. She moved to Port Arthur as a young child and has lived here ever since. Josephine was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Port Arthur and a member of the Altar Society. She was a devoted wife and mother raising twelve children, who she loved cooking and taking care of, she will be missed dearly.
Survivors include her children. Pete Graffagnino of Port Arthur, Josie Graffagnino Dearing and her husband George of Clear Lake, Texas, Lily Depew and her husband Glen of Port Arthur, Rosie Lupo of Nederland and Camilla Withers of Port Arthur; numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren as well as nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.
Josephine was preceded in death by her husband Anthony Graffagnino who passed away in 1947 and her children, Steve, Tony, Joe, Frank, Annie, Mary and Frances.
PORT ARTHUR- Keithen Sperling, 24, of Port Arthur passed away on June 7, 2006. He was born in Port Arthur, Texas to Kenneth Sperling and Rosalind Knatt. Keithen was an employee of Empire Scaffolding.
He leaves to cherish his memories three children, Kedrick, Cameron, and Carris; his fiancé and mother of his 2 youngest children, Virginia Powell; Mother, Rosalind Knatt Shelton; Father, Kenneth Sperling; Dad, Henry Shelton Jr.; Brothers, Corey DeShawn Knatt Shelton, Darnell Damone Reed Shelton; Grandmothers, Betty Babineaux, Gloria Hughes and Betty Lee Shelton; Grandfathers, Gilbert Sperling, Henry Shelton Sr.; and a host of uncles, aunts, cousins, other relatives and friends.
The wake will be held on Saturday, June 17, 2006 from 12:00 Noon - 2:00 PM at Gabriel Funeral Home, 2500 Procter Street, Port Arthur with funeral services immediately following. Reverend Troy Hopkins will be officiating.
Joe William Staggs
PORT ARTHUR- Joe William Staggs passed way in his sleep June 14, 2006. He graduated from Jefferson Davis High School, Port Arthur, Texas. He attended the University of New Mexico and played football on their freshman team. He attended Lamar University as well. He was a member of the US Army and served a portion of his enlistment in Germany. Following in the family business, his career was in real estate; he was a Broker, builder and investor.
He is survived by his brother and his wife, Ronald and Barbara Staggs, his daughter, Michelle Staggs, his longtime companion Jan Wilson and extended family Paul Terry, Christy Terry, Robert Terry, Rusty and Dusty Terry, Denise Terry and Lynne Terry.
Joe never met a stranger, he loved to talk politics and would debate on any subject. He will be sorely missed by his family and friends. Cremation by Deer Park Funeral Directors. She is preceded in death by her mother, Gerry Pipes; .sister, Sandy Dominguez. PORT ARTHUR- Ruble E. Polk, Jr., 81, of Port Arthur, Texas died Wednesday, June 14,2006 at Magnolia Manor in Groves, Texas. Ruble was born on October 24, 1924 in Bedias, Texas to Ruble E. Polk and Beulah McMahan Polk. He was a resident of Port Arthur, Texas for 20 years and retired from the US Military and Standard Brass.
Military Graveside Rites will be conducted at Houston National Cemetery on Monday, June 19, 2006. Visitation will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday, June 16, 2006 at Levingston Funeral Home in Groves, Texas. He is survived by his sister, Marguarite Hall of Port Arthur, Texas; numerous loving nieces and nephews and great nieces and great nephews.

GROVES - Maria G. Recio, 92, of Groves, Texas passed away at her home on Wednesday, June 14, 2006. She was born on June 24, 1913 in San Diego, Texas. She came to Port Arthur in 1943 and has lived in the area since. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leopoldo Recio.
A gathering of friends and family will be on Friday evening from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Clayton Thompson. Funeral services will be at 10:00 AM Saturday, June 17, 2006 at Clayton Thompson with her son, Leo Recio, Officiating. Burial will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Park.
She is survived by her six children, Mary Hernandez Weatherford of Port Arthur, Jane Garcia of Groves, Hector Recio of Groves, Estella Castro of Port Arthur, Irma Hope Perez of Port Arthur, Leo Recio of Columbus, Ohio and 16 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, 6 great great grandchildren and her special friend, Joe Escabedo of Port Arthur, Texas.
