Bishop Sarah Frances Davis

PORT ARTHUR — Feb. 4, 1948 - Nov. 9, 2013

   Bishop Sarah Frances Davis, former Port Arthur native, passed away Saturday, November 9, 2013 in Houston, Texas.  Bishop Sarah  was a member of the  Lincoln High School Class of 1966 and was  co-valedictorian with her twin sister, Carol.  She  was spiritually nurtured and baptized at the New Sixth Street Baptist Church in Port Arthur, TX.

   Bishop Davis was President of the Council of Bishops of the African Methodist Episcopal Church, Vice President of the World Methodist Council and the Presiding Prelate of the 16th Episcopal District (comprised of the Carribbean, Europe and Haiti) of the African Methodist Episcopal Church at the time of her death. 

   The funeral service will be held Saturday, November 16th at 11:00 AM in Houston, Texas at the Church Without Walls, 5725 Queenston Boulevard.  A 9:00 AM Ivy Beyond the Wall ceremony will be conducted by the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. with a public viewing from 9:30 AM until 10:45 AM under the direction of Gabriel Funeral Home.

   Bishop Sarah is survived by her devoted husband of 43 years, Claytie Davis, Jr.; two sons, Dr. Claytie Davis, III (Yolanda), Oakland, CA; Corey Davis, New York; and granddaughter, Alexandra Morgan Davis, Oakland, CA.  She also leaves to mourn her passing; her twin sister Dr. Carol T. Mitchell (Dr. Glenn), Omaha, NE; sister, Cornelia Getwood (Lawrence) Port Arthur, TX; sisters-in-law Diana Miller and Sharon Davis, brothers-in-law, Kenneth Davis (Patricia), Gregory Davis, all of Port Arthur and Donald Davis (Michelle), Houston, Texas, three uncles and one aunt; Dr. Chester Levy (Rita), Roy B. Levy (Delores) and Esther Dugay, all of Port Arthur, TX and Arthur Davis, Sr. of Crowley, LA. And a host of nieces and nephews.

   Bishop Sarah was preceded in death by her biological mother, Thelma Levy Taylor, who died shortly after she and her twin sister Carol were born; her paternal grandfather, Grandville Charlie Taylor; Sarah Joiner Taylor, the paternal grandmother who helped to raise her along with her stepmother, Betty Jean Malvo Taylor and her father, Cornelius Norman Taylor.
