Mr. John L. Mickens, Jr.

PORT ARTHUR —    Mr. John L. Mickens, Jr., of Port Arthur, TX died Monday, April 15, 2013 in Houston, Texas surrounded by family. John was born June 15, 1943 in Bryan, TX to the union of John and Alice Mickens. John moved to Port Arthur at a young age, where he went on the graduate from Abraham Lincoln High School in 1963.

   Upon graduating, John met his wife Rose Lee Williams, and married in 1968 from this union they had 5 children.

   John honorably served in the US Army from 1966 to 1970, where he toured Vietnam as a combat engineer (demolition) and earned the Vietnam service medal with 2 bronze stars and Vietnam campaign medal with 1960 device. He went on to attain the rank of SP5.

   A visitation is scheduled from 6PM until 9PM Friday, April 26, 2013 at Gabriel Funeral Home Chapel. Funeral service is scheduled for 11AM Saturday, April 27, 2013 at the Gabriel Funeral Home Chapel with his brother, David Mickens and nephew, Avery Mickens officiating. Burial will follow in Live Oak Cemetery under the direction of Gabriel Funeral Home.

   He was preceded in death by his father, John L. Mickens, Sr.; mother, Alice Mickens; brother, Lester Mickens; and great granddaughter, Olivia Johnson.

   John is survived by his wife of 45 years, Rose Mickens (Port Arthur, TX); 7 children, John L. Mickens III (Port Arthur, TX), Christopher A. Mickens (Port Arthur, TX), Catina L. Mickens (Port Arthur, TX), Lucius Carlisle (Lufkin, TX), Michael A. Mickens (Port Arthur, TX), Helena Carlisle (Lufkin, TX), and Gregory B. Mickens (Port Arthur, TX); 6 brothers, David Mickens (Christiansburg, VA), Charles Mickens (Houston, TX), Leonard Mickens (Bryan, TX), Ronnie Mickens (Port Arthur, TX), Eric Mickens (Bryan, TX), Ira Mickens (Port Arthur, TX); 3 sisters, Carolyn Coleman (Houston, TX), Dorothy Ford (Columbus, OH) and Laura Keller Mickens (Houston, TX); 18 grandkids, 9 great grandkids; nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and a special aunt and uncle, Liza and Cleveland Minard along with a very close friend, Calvin Collins.
