Jim Elms, 67, of Nederland, passed away Tuesday, June 11, 2013, surrounded by his family. He was born on May 12, 1946, to Mildred and James Elms, in Locust Grove, Arkansas, at home on Mother’s Day.
Jim graduated from Desha High School in 1964, and then served four years in the United States Air Force in Wichita, Kansas. Jim and his family moved to Nederland, Texas in 1983. He retired from Exxon Mobil after thirty-four years of service.
Jim was a member of Hillcrest Baptist Church where he loved to work with Upward Basketball Ministry and Vacation Bible School. He previously served as President of girls softball in Kansas. He was quick witted and always had a “come back”. Jim was always ready and willing to help anyone in need from mowing grass to cooking popcorn for the basketball kids.
He is survived by his loving wife of forty-seven years, Sharon Elms; son, Shawn Elms, both of Nederland; daughter, Dena Elms of Port Neches; brother, Mac Elms and his wife, Carolyn, of Pine Bluff, Arkansas; sisters, Doris House and Flora Carey and her husband, Robert, all of Batesville, Arkansas; four grandchildren, Brittney Elms of Nederland, Shaylon Elms, Elizabeth Elms, both of Orangefield; and Colbin Elms of Nederland; and one great-granddaughter, Chloe Elms of Nederland.
He is preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Jimmy.
A gathering of Mr. Elms’ family and friends will be from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., Thursday, June 13, 2013, at Broussard’s, 505 12th Street, Nederland. His funeral service will be 2:00 p.m., Friday, June 14, 2013, at Broussard’s, with interment to follow at Oak Bluff Memorial Park, Port Neches.
