A rosary will be held at Grimes Funeral Home at 6:00 p.m. Monday, April 28. A funeral mass will be held at Notre Dame Catholic Church at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, April, 29. A memorial service to celebrate his life will be announced at a later date.
Timothy Wayne Welty was born February 26, 1949, to William Eual and Zelma Welty in St. Louis, Missouri.
He spent his early childhood in Lake Jackson before moving to Port Arthur, Texas, where he graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in 1967. He attended Texas A&M's Maritime Academy in Galveston, where he received a B.S. in Marine Engineering. He married Janet Cox of Port Arthur in 1980, and by 1991, the couple had settled in Kerrville with their four children.
Fueled by a thirst for adventure, he enjoyed a career in the Merchant Marine that led him to unique and exciting experiences including the recovery of a sunken Russian submarine (Project Azorian); a skirmish with pirates off the tip of Africa, the transportation of resources throughout the far reaches of the globe; and even four trips to Kuwait and Iraq to supply the 4th Infantry Division for which he was awarded the Merchant Marine Expeditionary Medal with two stars.
He was extremely knowledgeable and constantly strove to learn more. His U.S. Coast Guard license was promoted to Chief Engineer. He gained ISA Level II certification, held a Texas HVAC Class A license, and was a certified member of the Refrigeration Service Engineers Society. In 2009, after 37 years of service in the Merchant Marine, he felt it was time to retire his sea legs and experiment with entrepreneurship. Moving from sea to soil, he began to establish a small business to manufacture renewable earthen bricks.
He was a devoted Catholic and an active parishioner at Notre Dame Catholic Church. He participated in ACTS, ACTS prison ministry, RCIA, and the Knights of Columbus. He was a generous, good-willed man who enjoyed hunting, camping, and spending time with friends and family. He had a passion for eclectic "Do it yourself" projects, working
with his hands, and a knack for problem solving. In his free time, he could often be found tinkering on various projects around his home.
Timothy peacefully passed away at his home in Kerrville on April 26, 2014. He was 65. He is preceded in death by his father, William Welty Sr., and his sister, Katrina Welty. He is survived by his mother, Zelma Welty; his wife, Janet Welty; their four children: Jesse Welty, Rachael Burr (Daniel), Zachary Welty, and Moriah Welty; and his siblings, Deborah Rogers, Christal Welty-Peters, Nelda Welty Johnson, and William Welty Jr.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the following organizations: St. Vincent de Paul, Notre Dame Catholic Church, The Pregnancy Resource Center of Kerrville, Peterson Hospice, or the Guadalupe Radio Network. Grimes Funeral Home is serving the family of Mr. Welty.
