Dr. Arsenio R. Martin, 69, of Port Neches, died Monday, July 15, 2013, at The Medical Center of Southeast Texas, Port Arthur. Born January 22, 1944, to Maria and Apolinario Martin in Cabatuan, Isabela, Philippines, Dr. Martin was a resident of the Mid-County area for the last 33 years and a longtime parishioner of St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, Nederland. He was a well-respected physician and humanitarian who was dedicated to helping others. He was Chairman/President of the Far Eastern University Medical School Alumni and later began a scholarship program for his alma mater. Dr. Martin also organized and participated in medical missions to remote parts of the Philippines. Locally, he served as President of Texas Association of Philippine Physicians (TAPP), Chief of Staff at Christus St. Mary Hospital, Medical Director of Dubuis-Port Arthur, President of Christus Physician Health Organization, and President of Medical-Surgical Mission of Texas. Dr. Martin had a passion for running and competed in major marathons, excelling in both the Houston and Boston Marathons and participating in the 1996 Olympic Torch Relay. Other hobbies he enjoyed in his spare time included photography, traveling, dancing, and spoiling his grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Dr. Fe Martin of Port Neches; sons Ron Martin and his wife, Laura Martin, of Deer Park, and Ryan Martin and his wife, April Warn, of Austin; daughter Regina Martin and her husband, Andrew Nguyen, of Mt. Belvieu; grandchildren Riley Martin, Abegail Hale, Chloe Nguyen, and Hudson Nguyen; brothers Leonardo, Rogelio, Charlie, and Emmanuel Martin; and sister Leticia Morabe.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Maria and Apolinario Martin, and brother José Martin.
A gathering of Dr. Martin's family and friends will be held from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., Thursday, July 18, 2013, at Broussard's, 505 North 12th Street, Nederland. A second gathering will be held from
5:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m., with a Rosary beginning at 7:00 p.m., Friday, July 19, 2013, at Broussard's. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, July 20, 2013, at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, 211 Hardy Avenue, Nederland, with interment to follow at Greenlawn Memorial Park, Groves.
