Lugestreen "Gussie" Harrison Cosey

PORT ARTHUR —    Lugestreen ‘Gussie’ Harrison Cosey died on Friday, the 25th of October at the age of 97.

Gussie was born in Glencoe, Louisiana on September 16, 1916.  She was the seventh of ten children born to Ada and Son Harrison.  In 1927 the family moved to Port Arthur to take advantage of the job opportunities provided by the local oil and chemical industry.  That same year the family joined St. Paul Methodist Church where Gussie remained a member until her death.

As a young girl, Gussie often went on calls with her mother as Ada delivered babies and helped the sick.  Because of this early influence she later became a midwife and practical nurse under the supervision of Dr. Gibson.

After World War II, on December 22, 1947, she married Henry Cosey.  They had one daughter – Pamala.

Gussie loved family, a joyous gathering of friends, church -- especially the Esther Wesleyan Joy Circle – Chinese cuisine, and her neighborhood community of Lakeside Park.  She also enjoyed a good football game.  When she moved to Magnolia, Texas her son-in-law, Dave, tried to teach her the finer points of basketball.  And, eventually, she developed an interest in the game.

Her ten brothers and sisters predeceased her as did her husband of 57 years.

Gussie is survived by her daughter Pamala (Dave), and a loving host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Visitation (9 am – 11 am) and funeral services (11 am) will be held Friday, November 1, 2013, at St. Paul United Methodist Church, 821 Freeman Avenue (formerly Texas Avenue), Port Arthur, Texas,  Pastor Patricia Wells Mayfield, presiding.

Interment will take place at Greenlawn Memorial Cemetery, 3900 Twin City Hwy, Groves.
