PORT ARTHUR —    Shelven “Big” Lewis Jr. 83, of Port Arthur, Texas died on Saturday May 3, 2014 at Gulf Health Care Center in Port Arthur.  A native of Evergreen, LA, Shelven moved to Port Arthur in his teenage years.

He was a graduate of Lincoln High School.  

   After graduation, he soon enlisted in the US Army and served in the Korean War. He worked for over 35 years in the Grocery/ Food Workers Industry working for Weingarten, Safeway, and Apple Tree Food Stores and was an active leader in his local workers union organization until his retirement in 1992.

  Shelven was an active member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church where he served as an Usher for many years as well as other committees.  He was also an avid supporter and active participant of The Mardi Gras of Southeast Texas where he was a part of the Majestic Krewe of Aurora for many years.

   Shelven is survived by his sisters Alice Winn (Michael) of Los Angeles, CA, Gracie Gable or Port Arthur, Texas and Thelma Gaines (Willie) of Baton Rouge, LA.; two sisters-in-law, Ella Lewis of Houston, TX and Catherine Lewis of Port Arthur, TX; a brother-in-law, Mervin Bell of Port Arthur, Texas and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and close friends.

   A visitation is scheduled for Saturday, May 10, 2014 from 9 a.m. to 11a.m with a rosary beginning at 10:15a.m. at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 620 53rd Street,  Port Arthur, Texas.  Funeral services will begin at 11a.m.  Entombment will follow in Live Oak Cemetery under the direction of Gabriel Funeral Home.
