Willie Chester "Cookiee" Wise, Sr.

PORT ARTHUR — June 18, 1922 – Feb. 23, 2010

   “God saw him getting weary, He did what he knew best, he came and stood beside him and whispered come and rest, he bid no one a last farewell; nor even a good-bye.  He was gone before we knew it, and God only knows why.”

   Our beloved Willie Chester, “Cookiee” Wise, Sr. was born June 18, 1922 to the parentage of the late Euphime Keller and Chester Wise in Port Arthur, TX..

   Willie received his formed education in the Port Arthur public school system.  He pursued and completed higher levels of education in Culinary Arts in the State of California.  He became an icon in the culinary trade in California, Louisiana and Texas.  He was the proud property owner of  “Soul Kitchen” in Port Arthur for many years. Willie later retired as a Merchant Seaman. 

   Having been reared and nurtured by a strong Christian family, Willie accepted the plan of salvation at an early age. He was baptized and served as a faithful member of St. Paul United Methodist Church.  He was a member of the United Methodist Men and the Male Chorus.

   His community activities included 66 years as a member of the United Most Worshipful Joshua Grand Lodge, Ancient Free and Accepted Mason, and United Most Worshipful Scottish Rite Grand Lodge - Doric Lodge #95, where he served as former Right Worshipful Past Grand Treasurer, a life long member of NAACP, and he served in the United States Army during  World War II.

   On Tuesday, February 23, 2010, the angels of the Lord came to take him to his beautiful new home for which he had sacrificed here on earth.  He peacefully slept away in the bosom of the Lord.

   He leaves to cherish his memories, his faithful and devoted wife of 46 years, Eunice M. Wise; 6 sons: Willard Wise, of San Francisco, CA, Don Arthur Wise of Sacramento, CA, Reginald Wise and Garland Celestine of Los Angeles, CA, Wayne Wise, Sr. (Karen) of Houston, TX, Shad Wise I (DaWana) of Port Arthur, TX; 4 daughters: Rev. Dr. DiAnn Wise-Johnson of Los Angeles, CA, Aquanetta Wise-Gollihar (Terry) of Las Vegas, NV, LaKercia Levy and NaKita Wise (Kenneth) of Port Arthur, TX; Sister: Kathrine Lartigue of  Port Arthur, TX; Aunt: Betty Keller of Port Arthur, TX; two special cousins, Edgar L. Davis (Debroah) and Clarence Jenefor (Linda); 25 grandchildren along with a very devoted grandson, Milton Thomas Levy, III; a host of great grandchildren; God child, Gretchen Harvey of Houston, TX; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends including life long friend, Lydia Celestine. He was the beloved brother-in- law of Jacqueline Pittman- Harvey of New Orleans, LA; and Garry R. Pittman (Doreen) of St. Rose, LA.

   He was preceeded in death by his parents, Chester Wise and  Euphime;   daughter,  Demetreal Wise-Green; sons, Willie Chester Wise II,  Leon “Baby Leon” Wise and Willie Chester Wise III; brother, Leon Wise, and son-in-law, Milton Thomas Levy, Jr.

   Visitation will be held from 9 AM - 11 AM, Saturday, March 6, 2010 at St. Paul United Methodist Church with funeral services immediately following. Internment will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Park under the direction of Gabriel Funeral Home.
