John Earl Gillespie

   John Earl Gillespie, born October 12, 1955 in Pineville, LA, to Hender and Alice Gillespie went home to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, Thursday, June 20, 2013.  John was raised in Port Arthur, Texas, and accepted Christ at an early age while attending Eastern Star Baptist Church.  

   He graduated from the Thomas Jefferson Senior High School in Port Arthur where he was a member of the “Yellow Jackets” football team.   After high school John attended Southwestern Business College in Houston, TX where he studied bookkeeping.  

   He then moved to Athens, Texas to continue his education at Henderson Jr. College.  In 1974, the family settled in Austin, Texas, where John attended the Professional Career Center and received his license in Private Security and Private Investigations.  John enhanced his spiritual growth while in Austin by taking courses in theology.

    In 1984, John was called to minister while he was a member of the New Lincoln Missionary Baptist Church.  He was licensed and ordained under the pastoral leadership of Rev. A R Evans.

   John went on to serve as Assistant Pastor at the Mt. Pilgrim Baptist Church under the pastoral leadership of Rev. Charles E. Gillespie, but he made his church home the New Lincoln Baptist Church in Austin.  

   John was compassionate with the gift of service which he exercised every day of his life by caring, helping and freely giving of his time to those in need.   John’s giving nature knew no boundaries.   John enjoyed reading and studying the word of GOD.  His motto was “Every day is a good day when you know the Lord.”

   John leaves to treasure his memory his loving mother, Alice Gillespie, his father, Hender Gillespie, Brothers: Charles, Jerome (Sandra), and Nathaniel (Karen).  Sisters: Janice Marie, Vickie, Tracy, and Stacy and a host of cousins, nieces and nephews.

John was preceded in death by Delores Gillespie (Sister), and Ruby Glasper (Sister).  

   Funeral services for John are set for 11:00 AM, Saturday, June 29, 2013 at New Lincoln Baptist Church, 2215 E. 8th Street, Austin, TX.  Visitation will be from 9:00 until 11:00.
