Alfredo de la Rosa, Sr., 95, of Nederland passed away Friday, February 8, 2013, at the Medical Center of Southeast Texas in Port Arthur. Born May 27, 1917 in Mexico City, Mexico, Alfredo was the son of Alvara Rodriguez and Lucio de la Rosa. He was raised by his grandparents Sotera Castro and Estanislao de la Rosa. Alfredo was a welder who later worked in construction.
In 2001 he was recognized by L.I.U.N.A. for his many years of service. As a child he sang in the choir and was an altar boy for Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. He was also a lifetime member. Alfredo was energetic, hardworking, loving, an driven. He loved education, especially mathematics, and believed that knowledge is power
Alfredo instilled that value in his children and encouraged them to pursue higher education. Because of his background of working on a farm, his joys included reading western novels and watching western movies. Alfredo also loved playing with his grandchildren and repairing items around the house. He was a man of his word and was devoted to his family.
Alfredo is survived by his wife Maria Isabel Ibarra de la Rosa of Nederland; children, Alfredo de la Rosa, Jr. and his wife Lizzette Rivera of Nederland; Tomas de la Rosa and his wife Mary Anne Leuchs of Baytown; Arturo de la Rosa and his fiancé Libertad Vazquez of Nederland; and Maria Alvara de la Rosa Smith and her husband Andrew Victor Smith of Houston; grandchildren, Sara de la Rosa, Angela de la Rosa, Tomas Ibarra Alfredo de la Rosa, Isabel de la Rosa, Frederick de la Rosa, Loren Smith, Andrew Smith, Jr., Breanna de la Rosa, Roberto de la Rosa, and Samya de la Rosa. He is also survived by his sister Guadalupe de la Rosa of Mexico City and many cousins in Port Arthur and Mexico.
A gathering of Mr. de la Rosa's family and friends will be Thursday, February 14, 2013 from 4:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. with a Rosary recited at 6:00 p.m. at Broussard's Mortuary, 505 North 12th Street, Nederland.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, February 15, 2013, at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, 3648 S/Sgt. Lucian Adams Drive, Port Arthur followed by entombment at Memory Gardens of Jefferson County, Nederland.
