PORT ARTHUR —  Monday, December 31, 2012, God called Mr. Cornelius Norman Taylor home from labor to reward. He was born on October 19, 1920, to Mr. Grandville and Mrs. Sarah Joiner Taylor in Port Arthur, Texas.

   Cornelius accepted Christ at an early age uniting with New Sixth Street Baptist Church (Mt. Sinai Missionary Baptist Church) under the leadership of Pastor Williams where he was active until his health failed.

   Cornelius graduate from Port Arthur Colored High School (Abraham Lincoln High School) in January 1940, where he was a left running half back for the Lincoln High Bumblebees football team. He was nicknamed “Red Rabbit” because of his running speed.

   He married Thelma Levy, June 6, 1946 and to this union was born twin girls, Sarah Frances and Carol Temperance. Thelma died on February 10, 1948 after complications in childbirth. On June 30, 1951, Cornelius married Betty Jean Malvo Taylor and to this 61 year union was born a girl, Cornelia Norma, (Connie). She and her family took care of both parents faithfully when their health failed until their passing.

   Cornelius is preceded in death by his wives Thelma Levy Taylor (February 10, 1948) and Betty Jean Malvo Taylor (December 4, 2012); and his parents Mr. Grandville and Mrs. Sarah Joiner Taylor. He leaves to mourn his passing three daughter: Bishop Sarah F. Davis (Episcopal Supervisor Claytie), Dr. Carol T. Mitchell (Dr. Glenn), Mrs. Cornelia Getwood (Lawrence); eight grandchildren: Dr. Claytie Davis Jr. (Yolanda); Mr. Corey Barrington Davis; Mr. Charles Mitchell; Mr. Glenn Mitchell Jr. (Danelle); Mr. Cornelius Mitchell (Josette); Ms. Carole Jean Mitchell; Ms. Sarah Louise Mitchell; and Ms. Chelsea Harolyn Collins; 12 great grandchildren; sister-in-law, Ms. Esther Dugay; brothers-in -law, Mr. Roy B. Levy (Delores), Dr. Chester Levy Jr. (Rita); special first cousins, Mrs. Cynthia Comeaux (John Sr.); Mrs. Helen Perry (Abbeville); a host of cousins and friends; and the caretakers who compassionately cared for him: Mrs. Francine Jackson, Mr. Keith Laurent, Mrs. Carol Lynn McZeal, Mrs. Mattie Warren, and Mrs. Janice Zeno.

   Funeral service is scheduled for 12 noon Friday, January 4, 2013 at Mount Sinai Missionary Baptist Church, with Reverend Dr. Randy Vaughn, Sr. officiating. Visitation is scheduled from 10:00 a.m. until 12 noon at Mount Sinai Missionary Baptist Church. Interment will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park under the direction of Gabriel Funeral Home.
