Claiborn "Smokey" Johnson

PORT ARTHUR —    On July 9, 1941 Claiborn “Smokey” Johnson was born to Sylvester ”Busta” and Velma Johnson in Port Arthur, TX. Claiborn accepted Christ at an early age and served at Eastern Star Baptist Church.

   He was educated in the Port Arthur Public School District, after graduating from Abraham Lincoln High School in 1959 Claiborn joined the United States Air Force, where he proudly served his country. After leaving the Air Force he worked as Chief Cook for National Maritime Union, and Seafarers International Union where he worked until moving to Houston, TX. Upon arriving to Houston Claiborn worked for Wackenhut Security.

   Claiborn met the love of his life Vera L. Harrison in 1998 and married her June 22, 2004. Also in 1998 he became a First Transit Bus Operator until promoted to supervisor in 2002 and remained until his health begin to fail in 2013.

   Claiborn leave to cherish his memory his loving and

devoted wife of 15 years Vera Johnson, two sons: Curtis (Debra), Clairborn II (Mesha), one daughter: Shelia Washington(Jerome) 5 Grandchildren,  4 Great Grandchildren,    Two Stepdaughters: Artnetta Harrison, Vernetta Harrison, one stepson Rodney Butler. One Sister Dorothy Hill-Dew, Three Brothers: Alvin (Bertha), Leroy, Michael(Cynthia) Johnson, Mother-in-law Willie Carol McClean Father-in-law Joe Hickman. And a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins. Claiborn is proceeded in death by His Father and Mother Sylvester & Velma Johnson, one brother Marvin Johnson, and brother-in-law Billy M. Dew.
