Hattie Marie Simon Griggie

PORT ARTHUR —    Hattie Marie Simon Griggie, 61-years-old, died on Sunday, September 8, 2013, at M D Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, Texas, after her valiant fight with  cancer.  

   Hattie was born on August 29, 1952 and was a lifelong resident of Port Arthur.  After graduating from Abraham Lincoln High School, Class of 1970, she attended Lamar University, and married her high school sweetheart, Willie Griggie, Jr.  She was employed at Texaco for eight years.

   Married for 43 years, Hattie and Willie raised their two dear children, Willie, III and Krystle Nicole.  Possessing a true servant’s heart, Hattie faithfully cared for family and friends through delicious cooking and baking from scratch – including cake decorating.  This led to the creation of Pie Face Bakery which she owned and operated for 14 years.

   She is preceded in death by her father, Vernon L. Simon, Sr.; her brother Alvin Craig Simon, her step father, Willie Ridgle; her paternal grandparents Freeman & Osburk Wallace Simon, Sr.; her maternal grandparents, John & Ora Norman Albro; in-laws Willie & Betty Joyce Griggie, Sr.; her nephew, Anthony James Griggie; her brother-in -law, Andre Downing and her best friend, Lydia Lewis.

   She leaves to mourn her death numerous family members , but mainly  her husband, Willie Griggie, Jr.; her children Willie Griggie III  (Mona) and Krystle Nicole Griggie (Tammy), of Atlanta Georgia, and Torren James (Aleeka) of Houston, Texas; her mother, Mary Alice Simon Ridgle, one brother, Vernon L. Simon, Jr. (Bridget); her only sister, Patricia Simon Downing who was not only her caregiver but was her confidant, prayer partner and closest friend, all of Port Arthur, Texas; two sisters-in-law, Cheryl Griggie and Dwonia Laday (Oliver); three brothers-in-law, Edgar, Michael, and Allen Griggie; two special nieces, Joy Guillory (Delton) and Kristi Lewis; eight grandchildren, and unfortunately too many beloved cousins, nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, and God children to list or even count.

   Funeral service is scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday, September 14, 2013 at St. John’s Catholic Church, 620 53rd Street, Port Arthur, TX with a viewing from 9 a.m. until service time.  Burial will follow in Live Oak Cemetery under the direction of Gabriel Funeral Home.
