—    Rev. Thomas Jefferson English, pastor of Port Arthur Barnes Memorial UMC, passed away on Saturday evening, April 6, 2013 at his home in Houston TX at the age of 91.

   He served as the pastor of Barnes Memorial UMC for thirty-five years until his transition from labor to reward on April 6,  2013.

   A Memorial and Appreciation Service in honor of our beloved pastor Rev. Thomas Jefferson English will be held at Barnes Memorial United Methodist Church on Saturday, April 20, 2013 at 11:00 a.m.

   Rev. Thomas Jefferson English was born in Marlin, Texas on January 21, 1922 to Mary Walls and Marion English. Rev. English met Vera Lee Butler Vinson in 1941 and they were united in Holy Matrimony on  July 3, 1943. To this union seven children were born.

   Rev English was preceded in death by his parents; wife of fifty-seven years. Vera (affectionately known as “Baby”); son, Thomas Jefferson English Jr.; granddaughter, Karisha English; brother, George Johnson and sister, Ruby Lee.

   During his call to the ministry he was appointed to two churches before serving at  Barnes Memorial UMC. His first appointment was at Cole Chapel UMC in Sealy, TX.

Afterwards he served as interim pastor at Pleasantville UMC, Houston, TX. Later he attended Perkins School of Theology in Houston and completed his studies at Southern Methodist University School of Theology in Dallas TX. In June, 1978 The United Methodist Church Texas Conference appointed Rev. English as pastor of Barnes Memorial United Methodist Church in Port Arthur, TX.

   Rev. English leaves to cherish his loving memory: Two sons, Napoleon Vinson, Jr. (Linda) and David Harold English (Theresa); Five daughters, JoAnn Williams, Joyce Duson, Alphese Evans, Ruby English and Diane Lacy (Michael); twenty-two grandchildren; twenty-eight great grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; brother Charles English (Joy Laverne); god daughter, Lizetta Hawkins (Erskine); son in ministry, Broderick Morris Sr.; brother-in-law, Mack Jones; sister-in-law, Odessa Hughes; the Barnes Memorial United Methodist Church Family and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

   The family asked that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Sister Vera English Scholarship Fund, Barnes Memorial UMC, 749 West 17th Street, Port Arthur, TX 77640.
