Christmas season arrives in Groves

GROVES — Text and phots by Linda Guillory

At 5:45 Friday Night, the parking lot in front of Groves Celebration Park was eerily empty.  The Tree Lighting Ceremony was to begin at 6 PM and no one was there.   As 6:00 approached, over eleven cars arrived and over 32 people were ready to celebrate in Groves at The Lighting of the City Christmas Tree even though they found out that the event was cancelled.  Those folks didn’t get the memo and didn’t see the news broadcast.

It seems that the weatherman has scared the local area with threats of sleet and freezing rains that have already affected the North Texas area.   The Groves Beautification Committee’s annual ceremony was cancelled as well as the Groves Christmas Parade.

The disappointed crowd included Moms and Dads and their children missing out on seeing Santa and choirs and live nativity.  Sadly even the merchants on Lincoln Avenue were closed early with only two stores, The Collection and The Olive Branch, remaining open late until 7 PM to accommodate those who might still be looking for a little Christmas cheer.

Even though the crowds were not present, JoLynn Anderson, owner of “The Olive Branch,”  was able to celebrate the night with several customers showing up at her store located on Lincoln Avenue shopping area.  “The Collection” was also open and sales person R J was found selling Christmas Ornaments to customers Robyn Masters and Kay Holst of Groves.

Joshua and Meredith along with children, Evan and Zoey, were able to view the light display in the park even though the celebration did not take place. Other teens, skating on the avenue, stopped by to see the light display.  Patrick Owen and his five-year old daughter, Avery, enjoy the lights from the Gazebo located in the center of the park.

Even though the event was canceled, Groves residents showed up and enjoyed the lights in Celebration park anyway.  The weather-man predicted bad weather and halted the celebration and parade in Groves, but he wasn’t the Grinch.  At least not yet since there are still 16 more days of shopping before Christmas and most merchants in Groves will remain open nightly until 7 PM.

Recent data from Beverage Digest suggest many are cutting back on diet sodas. Consumption of diet sodas fell more than that of sugary sodas in 2013. This raises two questions: Why is total consumption declining, and is drinking diet soda harmful to health?
