Preparing for the future; Nederland generators arrive

NEDERLAND — Nederland city leaders are preparing for the worst while hoping for the best.

In order to prepare for the possibility of a future hurricane or other disaster five sewer facility generators are currently being installed. On Friday, Ron Brown and Bennie Pickens with A&A Electric teamed up with Sign Doctors to place a generator on Canal.

“During Hurricane Ike, the electricity went out and people couldn’t flush their toilets, but now we have generators that will supply power,” Nederland City Clerk Gay Ferguson said.

The generators and a related collection line rehabilitation are funded by the General Land Office and the State of Texas to provide for disaster recovery and restoration of infrastructure for communities affected by the 2008 hurricanes. The funds are allocated by the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development through the Community Development Block Grant Program, according to information from the city.

Besides the Canal location, generators will be placed on Nederland Avenue, at the Jack Brooks Regional Airport, on Hodgson and at the water treatment plant, she added.

The improvements will ensure proper operation of the wastewater system and lift stations and uninterrupted sewage treatment, according to information from the city.

The next step in the progress will be to connect the generators.

Another project in the works that is funded through disaster funds is new traffic signals at 27th Street and Nederland Avenue, 21st Street and Nederland Avenue and 14th Street and Nederland Avenue.

“Entergy is scheduled to make the transfer of them next week,” Ferguson said.

The sewer facility generators, collection line rehabilitation and the traffic signal replacement are 100 percent federally funded.
