Koncaba to reign as Miss Nederland

NEDERLAND — As a young girl, Taylor Koncaba always admired the older girls who were vying for the title of Miss Nederland.

“I wanted to be up there one day,” Koncaba, 18, said.

She was, and now little girls all over Nederland will look up to her. The Nederland High School senior was named the 2014 Miss Nederland.

Although Koncaba had prior pageant experience, including cavOILcade, she never expected to take home the tiara.

“I thought maybe if I could place, that would be good, because you get scholarships to help with college,” Koncaba said. “But I had no idea I could win. Not at all.”

Koncaba also won the Miss Congeniality title — all too appropriate since she was more concerned about bonding with the other participants than winning the crown. Most of Koncaba’s competitors were also her friends, and one of them was even family.

“It brought us closer together,” Koncaba said of Taryn, her 16-year-old sister and fellow Miss Nederland contestant. “We got some one on one time.”

Koncaba’s schedule doesn’t allow for much one on one time. She is a member of student council, National Honor Society, Key Club, the Spanish Honor Society, and the Spanish Club. She also serves as president of her senior class.

“I really don’t have spare time,” Koncaba said.

In those rare moments of down time, Koncaba enjoys spending time with her sister and their parents, Margaret and Cliff Koncaba.

Koncaba will attend Lamar University in the fall to study optometry, a career path she became interested in after accompanying her sister to the eye doctor.

“It intrigued me because I’ve never had problems with my eyes,” Koncaba said. “I want to learn about different diseases and cures.”

She will also have the opportunity to utilize the skills that won her the Miss Congeniality title.

“I’m a people person, so it’ll be a good job,” Koncaba said.

As the reigning Miss Nederland, Koncaba hopes to make an impact on not only her hometown, but its neighbors.

“I want to do things in other communities — Port Neches, Groves, Beaumont,” she said. “I want to show them that Nederland is a good place to grow up, get an education and raise your kids.”
