Ned celebrates Halloween with Trunk or Treat

NEDERLAND — Vampires, super heroes and princesses swarmed Boston Avenue Wednesday night, showing off their long-planned costumes and searching for a tasty treat.

Nederland’s annual Trunk or Treat brought out scores of family members and friends to celebrate Halloween with the whole community.

Two blocks of the city’s busiest street were shut down for several hours so businesses, organizations and churches could set up shop to pass out candy and prizes.

The Nederland Parks and Recreation Department looks forward to the event all year, according to its director, Angela Famette.

After going as Angry Birds during last year’s event, replicating the popular iPhone game, this year’s theme was Star Wars.

The group donned Chewbacca and Luke Skywalker costumes,  “training” kids to become Jedi Knights.

“It’s a lot of fun for us,” Famette, who dressed as princesses Leia, said. “It gives us a chance to come out and be goofy.”

Jeff Trahan and his wife brought their two kids, a six-year-old ninja and a two-year-old alligator. He said it’s a good community experience.

“It’s a safe place to do it,” he said. “You don’t have to worry about things as much.”

While some costumes can be purchased pre-made and ready to go, others take time to build and are much more elaborate.

Bonnie Thierheimer spent six hours making costumes for her three kids. Once was a Christmas present and the other two were Superman and Batman Lego figures.

Thierheimer said she got the idea from Pintrest, a social media website for design and cooking ideas, but put her own touch to the costumes.

“I made the heads square instead of round,” she said. “It was just easier that way.”

Thierheimer said it was her first time at Trunk or Treat and was happy to see how well organized it was.

“It’s not just chaos,” she said. “I appreciate that.”
