Nederland Council approves layout for public safety complex

NEDERLAND — Nederland City Council is moving forward with plans for a public safety complex/emergency operations center.

Council met with Dohn LaBiche of the LaBiche Architectural Group Inc. during a work session on Monday and discussed the configuration of the facility. The layout/floor plan was approved during the regular meeting that was held later that day.

From his seat next to councilmembers City Manager Chris Duque looked across the audience seating area toward a back wall that separates city hall from the fire station.

“Right now we (councilmembers) are seated in what will be the fire station’s sleeping quarters,” Duque said while gesturing toward the area.

Earlier this year Nederland Fire and Rescue was awarded a $2.1 million Port Security Grant to fund the construction/renovation of the fire station and EOC and a portion of that grant is earmarked for equipment. The total cost to renovate the aging building comes in at $2.9 million with $2.4 million going toward the fire station/EOC and $500,000 going toward the police station.

“We are gutting out just about everything except for Central Dispatch,” LaBiche said while using a laser pointer to highlight the floor plan.

The grant also requires the city foot the bill for a 25 percent match of about half-a-million dollars.

The city will issue certificates of obligation to fund its part of the project.

And while council got a glimpse of the layout via LaBiche’s plans, nothing is set in stone. The city is required to inform the government of the square footage but individual spaces inside the facility can still be tweaked at this time.

Duque explained that what council did on Monday was to approve a “footprint” of the building.

“There will be some alterations and we will have an opportunity to make changes later,” he said.

In other business, councilmembers authorized Mayor Dick Nugent to sign a gift deed from the Nederland economic Development Corporation for the NEDC’s property located at North 12th Street and Atlanta Avenue. The property will be used as the site for a new city hall.
