Nederland Heritage Festival's Cuisine Walk offers plethora of festival food

NEDERLAND — The lure of festival food was strong as families lined up to grab a bite to eat during the opening day of the Nederland Heritage Festival on Tuesday.

Over at the First United Methodist Church’s strawberry shortcake booth volunteers donned caps similar to the one wore by the cartoon character of the same name.

Even more fitting was the sight of strawberry-blonde haired Olivia Spittler, 5, taking a bite of the dessert.

Her parents, Lola and Kenneth Duhon of Bridge City, already had their own orders of egg rolls and red velvet funnel cake.

“We come every year,” Lola Duhon said after taking a quick bite of egg roll. “Affordable prices, family environment and kids are the center of the whole event. I like that.”

Proceeds from the church’s booth will go toward their Pew Fund which will pay for the remodeling of the sanctuary.

Nederland Little League Baseball had a booth nearby and were offering curve balls to the hungry.

Curve balls, Colt and Kara Smith explained, are fried macaroni and cheese balls.

“But my favorite is the pork piquant on rice,” Colt Smith said.

Jana Lane, of NLL, predicted a good run this year.

The Cuisine Walk features numerous food booths each offering something different. Non-profit organizations are offering everything from turkey legs and pork kabob’s to hamburgers, blooming onions and stuff baked potatoes. There’s also numerous items for those with a sweet tooth including funnel cakes, fried Oreos and cheesecake on a stick.

The Nederland Heritage Festival invites participants to “Come Along for the Ride” as they celebrate the 41st year of the family oriented event. The festival will continue Wedneday daily through Sunday.
